Tourism in Syria has recorded a strong growth in the last few years. Minister of Tourism Saadallah Agha al-Qalaa told a Brazilian delegation last week that commercial visitors to Syria increased by 9 percent in the first half of this year even in the midst of the international financial crisis, compared with the same period last year.

According to the minister, tourism has accounted for 11 percent of Syria's gross domestic product (GDP) in the last few years, and Syria is now receiving 5.4 million visitors per year on average.

So far, Syria has tended to attract visitors from other parts of the Middle East, but the promotion campaign by the state and tour operators in recent years have targeted tourists Europe and Asia.

One important relations with Syria in the Turkish sector, and the relationship between the two countries has grown significantly in the last few years.

Turkey and Syria have signed a bilateral agreement to encourage and jointly promote the two countries as tourist destinations abroad, which means that Turkey and Syria can sell a service package including the two countries.
