Historic forts employees hopeful for summer tourism

Historic forts employees hopeful for summer tourism
BY SCOTT FITZGERALD, THE SOUTHERN
Sunday, June 28, 2009 11:37 PM CDT
It was a bleak outlook for Southern Illinois' historic preservation sites, including forts in this area, in the fall.

Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich slashed the Historic Preservation Agency budget in half, necessitating the closure of doors Dec. 1 at Fort de Chartres, the Pierre Menard Home, Fort Kaskaskia and Cahokia Courthouse. Thirty-three employees lost their jobs as a result of the site closures.

But when Pat Quinn took the governor's seat earlier this year, one of his first priorities was signing a bill for re-appropriations that reopened the sites and reinstated those state employees.

Even with a shaky future depending on this year's final budget soon to be ratified, the sites and those classified as state parks are open this summer with the exception of Fort Defiance near Cairo, which needs maintenance.

"We're trying to approach this on a day-to-day basis. We have no new projects scheduled. We're just putting things back together. Hopefully we'll get a favorable (state) budget," said Dennis Thomas, assistant site manager at Fort de Chartres.

The Southern Illinoisan checked with people such as Thomas and others at some of the immediate fort sites in the area and found out:

Fort de Chartres: Located on Illinois 155 northwest of Prairie du Rocher in Randolph County, this historic fort built in 1720 served as France's Illinois Country headquarters for 10 years before it was surrendered to Great Britain in the 1763 Treaty of Paris that ended the Seven Years War.

In 1913, the Illinois Legislature authorized purchase of the stone for the site, which has undergone several reconstructions for preservation purposes.

Although the historic site got a late start opening this spring, Thomas said the two-day Rendezvous, which is the first weekend in June and one of the site's biggest annual events, drew more than 16,000 people.

"It was encouraging because it showed people will return," Thomas said about the event that features shooting competitions, military drills, dancing, music, food and traders of 18th-century style goods.

The site is busy on weekends, serving as a unique spot for weddings, reunions and family gatherings, Thomas said.

He suggests people wishing to book an event or make an inquiry call or fax 618-284-7230 or e-mail ftdchart@htc.net.

Fort Massac State Park: This historic outpost dates back to the mid-1700s and is known for its strategic location overlooking the Ohio River and now in the 1300 block of Fifth Street in Metropolis in Massac County. Park superintendent Terry Johnson said the site is lucky because it hosts so many living history events such as the annual fall encampment that attracts more than 80,000 people.

In addition to historic structures including a museum and having the distinction as Illinois' first state park dedicated Nov. 5, 1908, Fort Massac offers picnicking, camping, hiking, boating and hunting opportunities within a 1,450-acre area.

The area has been the victim of recent weather events such as a massive ice storm in the winter and Hurricane Ike winds that caused a lot of debris to fall.

"We are still cleaning up after the ice storm. Our biggest picnic area should be ready to go pretty soon. We're in decent shape," Johnson said.

People who want to plan an event at the park should call ahead of time at 618-524-4712 or e-mail dnr.r5parks@illinois.gov.

Fort Defiance: This former state park site off U.S. 51 two miles south of Cairo is owned by the city of Cairo and is closed, according to city officials. Forty acres at a site that overlooks the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers needs to be mowed, said a city official who would not give his name.

Turkey becomes growingly popular

On a sunny weekday afternoon in the Sultanahmet district, a group of British men form a line outside the Blue Mosque. They are not at the mosque entrance alongside the groups of tourists from Japan, Spain and the US, who await the end of the afternoon prayer so that they can enter and take pictures, but are instead standing around the fountain in the mosque's courtyard, waiting for their turn to make ablutions so that they can join the prayer. The men are among a growing demographic of tourists visiting İstanbul, Muslims from Europe, the United States, Indonesia and beyond who elect to finish off their religious pilgrimages to Mecca in Saudi Arabia with a trip to İstanbul, the last center of the caliphate and the point from which the Muslim world was administrated for centuries.

Turkey can be an ideal location for Muslim tourists for many reasons. Outside of the universal attractions, several factors in Turkey appeal to Muslim considerations: the ready availability of meat that is halal (prepared according to Islamic guidelines, similar to kosher), restaurants that do not serve alcoholic beverages, mosques to pray in and the call to prayer that sounds through the streets five times a day. Though increasing numbers of Muslims are traveling to Turkey following Hajj or Umrah -- the greater and lesser Muslim pilgrimages, respectively, to Mecca -- there are few packages geared toward religiously focused tourism for such travelers.

Tourist Destinations in Vancouver

Granville Island

Located on the southern bank of False Creek at the foot of the Granville Street Bridge, Granville Island is a very popular tourist attraction. It began its existence as a 8-hectare or 20-acre shallow sandbar that was a favorite location for the local Squamish tribe to place their fish nets during their winter camping along False Creek. With the destruction of Vancouver from the Great Fire of 1886, many homeless white settlers moved to a squatter’s camp in this general area. The next great amount of interest shown to the large sandbar was with the opening of the Granville Street Bridge on January 4, 1889. This bridge not only linked the two sides of False Creek but also created a new industrial section of the city. A group of businessmen lead by Hugh Keefer decided that the sandbar would make a perfect place for a new sawmill if it could just be filled in, which they immediately began to do without getting permission from the city. Vancouver’s harbor master ordered them to stop driving pilings into the sandbar immediately. His order only resulted in the pilings being driven faster with crews working on it day and night. Where the city failed to stop the piling work, the city’s largest landowner, the Canadian Pacific Railway, also known as CPR, succeeded by convincing a judge that the sandbar was their property and the men were trespassing. Keefer attempted to buy the property from the CPR but was turned down. The CPR felt it had plenty land in Vancouver already without creating an island.

Canada Place

Canada Place, located at the end of Burrard Street and extending into the Vancouver Harbor, was originally a pier. It was converted into the Canada pavilion for Expo 86, the last World’s Fair in North America,. The theme of the Expo was “Transportation and Communication: World in Motion - World in Touch” and was to highlight how Vancouver had evolved into one of the world’s major port and transportation hubs. The architecture of the Canada pavilion was to make the facility appear to be a gleaming ship with full white sails that might set sail at any moment. After the Expo, the Canadian pavilion was renamed “Canada Place” and was converted to a multi-use facility that includes a convention center, a hotel with restaurant and spa, and an IMAX theater. Canada Place is used as a docking point for cruise ships, especially in the busy summer travel season.

If you are visiting Canada Place at noon, you will get to hear the Heritage Bells. The Heritage Bells are actually air horns that are mounted to the roof of the Pan Pacific Hotel at Canada Place. The tune played is the first notes to “Oh Canada”, Canada’s national anthem. The Heritage Bells were originally designed in 1967 as part of the BC Hydro’s contribution to the Canadian Centennial, the 100 year anniversary of the Confederation of Canada, when the first Canadian territories combined to form the Dominion of Canada.

Chinese Gardens

The first thing that you notice at the Center is not the Center itself but the elaborately carved white marble Chinese gate before the Center on Pender Street. The posts and the structure of the gate are from the original Chinese gate from Expo 86, Vancouver’s World’s Fair. The white marble panels at the top of the gate are a gift from from Vancouver’s sister city of Guangzhou. The carvings on the panels incorporate the principles of Yin and Yang, or opposites. The front of the center panels show the opposites of male and female, of sun and moon, of the earth and heaven, and of active and passive. The two side panels show four supernatural creatures, which each represent a quarter of the heavenly vault in Chinese mythology. The two creatures on the side panel on the right front are the phoenix and the dragon. The dragon in Chinese mythology is considered a very powerful and benevolent creature. The dragon not only brings rain from the heavens but also is associated with the male principle of Yang. Chinese emperors also used the dragon as the symbol of their supreme authority. The phoenix is female counterpart or Yin to the Yang of the male dragon. The phoenix represents “the sweet nectar of the gods” that descends from heaven to earth and is symbolic of the sacred doctrine of Buddhism. The phoenix represents purity and is a symbol of the Chinese Empress. The two creatures on the panels to the left are the White Tiger and the Black Tortoise, once again Yin-Yang opposites.

Christ Church Cathedral

The modern downtown skyscrapers tower over the small Christ Church Cathedral at the corner of Georgia and Burrard Street, but the Church still seems to retain its quiet dignity. This church building was an idea in the building committee of the Christ Church congregation as early as 1888, but the stone church would not be completed until 1895 due to the lack of money. However, once the money was acquired, the construction was completed in only 6 months. During most of this long construction period, the only portion of the building that was completed was the basement. A roof was placed over the basement, and services were held there. Because of this the unfinished church was given the undignified nickname of the “Root Cellar.”

The Gastown Steam Clock
The Gastown Steam Clock located at the northwest corner of Water and Cambie Streets is practically impossible to miss. The highly ornate clock weighs over two tons, has four illuminated clock faces for easy viewing at night, and blasts steam into the air from its top every fifteen minutes. Its chimes play the same tune as the Big Ben chimes of London’s Westminster. Even more obvious is the crowd of tourists that surround the clock every 15 minutes as they wait for the chimes to play. The clock may appear old, but it was constructed in 1977 by Ray Saunders, a local clock maker. The design is based on a 1875 design. The steam for the clock is a byproduct of underground pipes that supply heat to several downtown buildings. Usually the excess steam escapes through grates in the sidewalk. Sometimes the city puts planters above these vents to add a more decorative element. In this case, the city choose to use this unique clock that has become a must-see for Vancouver tourists.

Located in the Eastern part of India, West Bengal is a state, which is considered as a tourist haven, especially for its breathtaking coastal beauty. Located on the coast of Bay of Bengal, West Bengal boasts of several beaches that attract thousands of tourists throughout the year. The Eastern part of Medinipur district is the queen of coastal beauty in West Bengal. The district houses several small and big beach resorts, which include Digha and Shankarpur, two of the most visited tourist spots in entire Eastern part of the country. Another small area in the district, which is fast developing into travel destination, is Junput. As Digha and Shankarpur are getting more and more congested due to growth of hotel industry, people are preferring trips to Junput, where the nature is more serene, the atmosphere is more calm and the sea is less wild. For people who prefer staying in places that are far away from the hustle and bustle of city life and where nature is more serene, Junput is an ideal place to go.

The scenic beauty of Junput is almost same as that in Digha and Shankarpur. You will find rows of casuarinas trees that create a wonderful backdrop during the sunset in the Western sky. As the beach is less crowdy compared to the other popular resorts, one will surely enjoy a romantic stroll through the soft golden sandy surface of Junput and the refreshing sea breeze, which blows throughout the day. Sea in Junput is not as ‘wild’ as that in Digha and Shankarpur and that’s why is an ideal place to opt for sweeping. One may also enjoy his/her time relaxing on the beach and taking sunbath.

Junput always had the potential to enjoy the status of a beautiful beach resorts but surprisingly its development was overlooked by the government after the independence. That’s why the accommodation facility in Junput is still not much developed. There are very hotels and resorts in Junput where you can stay overnight. So its better to stay at Digha or Shankarpur and visit Junput for a few hours. Junput is just 40 kilometers away from Digha and is quite well-connected by frequent bus service. Buses for Junput are available regularly from Digha bus terminus, so getting one should not be a problem. For reaching Junput from Kolkata one may take the Digha-bound bus and get down at Contai.

There is not much to see in and around Junput, except the duck breeding farm and the Center for Study in Oceanic Biology. Originally a small fishing village, Junput has turned into a center for brackish fish cultivation and is the place where research on fishes is carried on by West Bengal fisheries department. That’s good for the food lovers as there is ample opportunity to try delicious seafoods like lobsters and pomfrets that are available at a cheap rate in the local dhabas.

Sri Lanka drafts new rules for marine tourism
June 26, 2009 (LBO) - Sri Lanka is drafting new rules to protect the marine environment with tourist ventures such as whale and dolphin watching expected to become big business with the end of the war, a senior official said.
Tourism ministry secretary K A D George Michael said the government was aware of the importance of safeguards to protect the marine habitat and ensure sustainable tourism practices.

With the end of the 25-year ethnic war after the defeat of Tamil Tiger rebels last month, the authorities anticipate a revival in tourism which had long been in the doldrums owing to the conflict.

Already, a few tourist businesses have begun promoting whale and dolphin watching tours, a hitherto unexploited resource.

The new tours offered by operators have raised fears among environmentalists and scientists of potential harm to marine life and the environment, given their unregulated nature.

Marine scientists have sounded alarm over aggressive practices adopted by some operators in the southern waters during whale watching tours for tourists that have disturbed the animals.

They have pointed to the use of high speed boats and close approaches to surfacing whales as practices that need to be regulated.

Michael told a news conference that the government was drafting regulations to cover the new businesses.

"We also need to work out safeguards while promoting new tourism ventures," he said.

"So we're drafting rules to cover for instances, viewing distances and times for sightseeing. Some of these tours are now being done in an ad hoc manner."

Michael noted how unregulated tourism had spoilt some of the island's best beaches such as in Hikkaduwa, on the south-west coast, whose coral reefs which attracted tourists have largely been destroyed.

He said the ministries of tourism, fisheries, and the environment were holding talks on drafting the new rules.

Argentina's Ministry of Health Graciela Ocaña Brazilian said the recommendation was "reasonable" similar to that "we applied on risk areas such as the United States, Mexico and Canada", when the outbreak started.

Meantime Chilean President Michelle Bachelet speaking from the World Health Organization's offices in Washington said she was in "complete disagreement with the Brazilian government recommendation."

"The only solution is cooperation, joint efforts and not slamming doors to people's movements and visiting other countries," she added.

The Brazilian Health Ministry said in a communiqué that the recommendation was issued on the basis of epidemiological criteria, "since a" large number "of Brazilian patients with the virus AH1N1 caught the disease in Argentina and Chile.

The Brazilian government's measure could be extended to other countries "with manifestations similar" to those of Chile and Argentina, the note said.

"We believe that this kind of replies, adopted from fear, are not the replies that those of us working in health issues the know are not appropriate to address an epidemics of this kind", underlined Ms. Bachelet who is a doctor.

Places To Visit In Salvador, Brazil

Back To Main Menu

While Rio de Janiero is where most tourists in Brazil head, Salvador, Bahia is the place to truly experience the rich culture of the biggest country in South America. The food, music, and people in Salvador are completely unique to the region. Here are a few places to visit if you’re heading to Salvador, Brazil.

Pelourinho

The Pelourinho (pillory) is where the slave trade came in through Brazil, and it’s the historical district of Salvador. The area, featuring traditional colonial Portuguese architecture and dozens of beautiful churches, was renovated in the 1990’s, and is truly the cultural heart of the city. Stroll around the Pelourinho for a little while and you’re almost guaranteed to see some live drumming and capoeira (Brazilian dance and martial art) happening in the square. The Pelourinho is loaded with restaurants specializing in real Bahian cuisine, or you can just buy an acarajé from a Bahiana off the street.

This district is the perfect place for souvenir shopping. The cobblestone streets are lined with artwork, drum shops, clothes boutiques, and more. As a tourist, you’ll be swarmed with local children and adults alike trying to sell bracelets and other knick-knacks- Brazilians aren’t shy! The Pelourinho is also the place to catch some great live music, including Olodum, Brazil’s most famous samba reggae band.

Mercado Modelo

After the Pelourinho, take the Elevador Lacerda (giant outdoor elevator) down to the Mercado Modelo. This market used to be a slave warehouse, and was rebuilt after a fire in the early 1970’s. Now the Mercado Modelo is the place for barter shopping, where you can find everything from arts and crafts, clothes, CDs, DVDs, jewelry, etc.

Beaches

Salvador is known as the destination for Brazilians who live in Rio and need a vacation! As a bay city surrounded by ocean, Salvador has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Some of the most popular are Barra, Piatã, and Flamengo, but there are tons to choose from. Check out this site for more detailed info on all the beaches so you can choose based on what you want to do- sunbathe, swim, or water sports. Wherever you go, you’re sure to find white sand, clear blue water, and tons of barracas selling food and drink.

Carnaval

Many tourists head to Rio’s famed Carnaval celebration, but it’s Salvador that hosts the biggest and best street party in the world every Feburary! In Salvador, you don’t watch Carnaval- you are Carnaval.

During the week of Carnaval, the city more than doubles in size. All day and all night, the streets are packed with revelers enjoying the many parades featuring bloco afros and trio electricos (giant trucks with live bands). If the streets are too crowded, you can purchase a ticket to a camarote, enormous stands built onto the sides of buildings, fully equipped with bars and even restaurants. Camarotes are a great way to see several bands as they pass without roaming the streets.

São João

Can’t make it to Carnaval? The second biggest festival in Brazil, São João, is in June. During this festival, Brazilians head out to the country to spend a few days eating and dancing. The popular music during São João is called forro- the Brazilian version of country music which uses drums and accordions. As always, Brazilians love to dance, and the traditional forro dance resembles square dancing.

Salvador is a beautiful city with friendly people, great food, and some of the best beaches in the world. If you’re looking for a relaxing place to visit, Salvador, Brazil just may be the best destination for you.

Top Ten Best Summer Party Beaches

Back To Main Menu

You lookin' to party? You lookin' to drink cold beer with your shirt off and not get grief for it? You've got so many great party beaches to choose from in the US. But we've narrowed the list down to ten of the best using certain criteria.
The number of nearby bars plays a large role in the ranking of a party beach, especially those with "Dirty", "Margaritaville", two guys' names (two guys partied there so hard that they decided to stay and open up their own bar), or a sexual body part or innuendo in the name.

If alcohol is permitted, that's a big plus because that's a hard thing to find these days. And the amount of drunks found near the waves also factors into ranking. Check out the list and let me know if we overlooked anyone.

10. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
This excellent tourist trap has one of the largest waterparks and one of the largest shopping areas in the southeastern United States. There's also the Myrtle Beach Pavillion that boasts 3 roller coasters and 2 water rides. After you've had your fun there it's time to drink.

Unfortunately, alcoholic beverages are not permitted on this beach but you're never far and you can always party at the Margaritaville and a bar called Dirty Don's.

9. Nauset Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
While much of Cape Cod is overflowing with tourists, Nauset does get crowded but you won't find too many families on this beach due to the heavier surf. You can also find more secluded places along the shore where you'll be less likely to get caught with a six pack -- but keep in mind, alcohol is prohibited in general.

Cape Cod also has a lot of towns with a lot of bars and Orleans -- where Nauset is located -- is certainly not the least of them. Land Ho is a local favorite with a real pub-like atmosphere and the Binnacle Tavern. Other nearby towns also have great nightlife, like the Beachcomber in Wellfleet and The Sand Dollar in Dennisport.

8. Wildwood Beach, New Jersey
You can't drink on the beach but you should be able to get a good sip of something if you hang out on the Boardwalk. It's not exactly the same as drinking on the beach but almost.

Another selling point for Wildwood is the class of bars available around the beach. Shakers, The Deck or The Hurricane. A comment on the Hurricane Web site reads, "Yuck! This place is a bikini bar you have girls dancing in bikinis or provocative clothing. I just found it to be very un classy ..." Drink up!

7. Santa Cruz Beach, California
Enjoying thrill rides on the Beach Boardwalk, surfing at Steamer Lane and relaxing in downtown Santa Cruz. There are a lot of things to do in addition to drinking. And smoking weed. Unofficially, it's the pot capital of the nation. That puts it high on the list.

People in this town are pretty nice and there are plenty of places to drink including the Catalyst, which sounds like your drinking enabler and 99 Bottles, which sounds like a lot of work - you can't leave until it's 0 bottles of beer. And they have what they claim is the "original" Margaritaville.

6. Hermosa Beach, California
One of the greatest things about the entire Hermosa Beach area may be that everyting is within walking distance -- no driving necessary. Which means you can get rip-roaring drunk and not have to worry about a designated driver. As with all California beaches, drinking is not permitted on the sand so head to the bars -- you can walk there.

Among the many drinking establishments you'll find in the area, Fat Face Fenner's Fishack offers a view of the pier to satisfy your voyeur tendencies. You can also enjoy the amazing happy hour at Sharkeez and the beach crowd that gravitates to the Poop Deck.

5. The Hamptons Beaches, New York
Every summer, throngs of young people leave the city and head out to the end of Long Island -- particularly to the Hamptons. In packs, they rent houses and spend weekends getting drunk together and passing out. While drinking is not permitted on the Hamptons beaches -- that does not mean it doesn't happen.

But it may be best to stick to the establishments where you can drink. One of the most famous in the area is called the Boardy Barn in Hampton Bays. This bar alone may be the reason the Hamptons can be considered a party beach area. Only open on weekends from 4 - 8pm, young drinkers line up around the block to get in and drink cheap beer. You can also find Southampton Publick House, a local purveyor of fine beverage.

4. Panama City Beach, Florida
Since the Miracle Strip Amusement Park was shut down in 2003 in order to become lame ass condos there's nothing to do but drink -- which makes it the number one party beach of the United States. You can consume alcohol on the white sand portion of the beach or in your motel room, by your motel's pool or in a nearby bar or lounge.

Take your pick: they have the Dawg Pound Pub & Oyster Bar, Show N Tails, Rotten Ralph's, Lazy Dog Grub & Pub, Fudpucker's and a Margaritaville.

3. East Beach, Galveston, Texas
It's not far from Texas' biggest party location on South Padre but it's got a little party of its own going on. You'll always find something going on there from concerts to bikini contests. And -- you can drink on the beach, too.

This place has so much partying going on that they made it easy for students to qualify for food stamps. Be careful of the local shrimp but get your drink on. They have a Mardi Gras party in town every year -- it's smaller than New Orleans but just as drunk. Plus, on your 21st birthday, you can go to the bar called 21 and get giggly wasted.

2. Cocoa Beach, Florida
Not far from Daytona Beach, Cocoa actually permits alcohol consumption on the sand. Beach goers have been known to pack up coolers of beverages because they can sip whatever they like as long as it's not in a glass bottle. But some simply enjoy the bars along the shoreline.

Coconuts on the Beach is one of the popular places located just down the road from Ron Jon's Surf Shop. Sip frozen cocktails while admiring the horizon from the outside deck. Or you can head back a ways to Daytona beach and enjoy all the bar offerings there.

1. South Padre Island, Texas
This is the most popular spring break destination in Texas -- and possibly the country. But it's also quite the party place in the summer time. For those kids who can't make it to Cancun this year, consider yourself lucky that you can drink all the Shiner Bock you want. Alcohol is allowed on the beach and happily consumed by many enjoying the sun.

You can also drink at Tom & Jerry's Beach Club Bar or Dirty Dave's Deck. If you get burned out from partying, go north to check out Port Aransas or Mustang Island and chill out.
