DESTINATION -SURFING

Back To Main Menu

DESTINATION -SURFING is the act of a person (or a boat) riding down a breaking wave, gathering speed from the downward and forward movement. Most commonly, the term is used for a surface water sport in which the person surfing moves along the face of a breaking ocean wave (the "surf"). However, surfing is not restricted to saltwater, but can sometimes take place on rivers, using a standing wave.
The main use of the word "surfing" is for riding waves using a board on which the surfer stands. This is sometimes called "stand-up surfing", to distinguish it from bodyboarding, in which the individual riding the wave only partly raises his upper body from the board surface, and from bodysurfing, where no board at all is used.
Two major subdivisions within contemporary stand-up surfing are longboarding and shortboarding, reflecting differences in surfboard design and riding style.
In tow-in surfing (most often, but not exclusively, associated with big wave surfing), a surfer is towed into the wave by a motorized water vehicle, such as a jetski, generally because standard paddling is often ineffective when trying to match a large wave's higher speed.
Depending on wave size, direction, and on wind conditions, sailboats can also surf on larger waves on open sailing waters. Unlike "surfers", sailors usually do not surf in beach waves, and they usually do not go out in order to surf; instead, the wave and wind conditions may allow them to boat surf during a sailing trip. More recently, the same principle of craft-based surfing has been increasingly used by kayakers, notably in the sport of playboating, which is mostly carried out on rivers (see playspot).
Surfing-related sports such as paddleboarding and sea kayaking do not require waves, and other derivative sports such as kitesurfing and windsurfing rely primarily on wind for power, yet all of these tools may also be used to ride waves.
Recently with the use of V-drive boats, wakesurfing has grown. Wakesurfing is surfing behind a boat, riding the wave or wake which is created by the boat.

DESTINATION -Holidays in Turkey provide

Back To Main Menu

DESTINATION -Holidays in Turkey provide a complete kaleidoscope of exciting opportunities for couples looking for last minute breaks in the sun, families planning children-friendly holidays to Turkey and anyone wanting a different take on a sun-and-sea based Mediterranean getaway. Turkey straddles two continents; it's where the East and the West meet to shake hands so, as you might expect, holidays in Turkey offer a coming together of many different ingredients.
The food, for example, is a fusion of influences; the traditional Meze, as many as fifteen small dishes adding up to an epic – and epicurean – feast, may originally have come from Greece, but the Turkish twist, and the bold use of spices suggest influences of the East.
Similarly, the Greek, Persian, Roman and Byzantine empires have all contributed to the wealth of beautiful architecture – the mosques, the temples, the amphitheatres, the tiny traditional villages – that make holidays to Turkey mini-voyages of exploration and travels in time. Especially if you head for cultural centres like Ephesus – one of the Med's best-preserved Roman city, or the Crusader city of Bodrum.
But, of course, all is not ancient. The coastline of sun-washed sandy beaches, rugged cliffs and vivacious resorts beckons. Holidays in Turkey always include some dedicated sun-lounging. And revelry. Antalya is home to the Med's largest floating nightclub. Gumbet offers a cornucopia of bars, restaurants and clubs, rivalled by the relentless action in Marmara.

Luxury Hotel Deals: Are They Out There?

 Peninsula Beverly Hills
Finally, after a long hard year of work, the time to take a vacation with your family has come. However, you may find that your budget simply won't permit you to stay in a fancy hotel with all the bells whistles… if you don't know how to find bargains, that is. Those hotels with the 1000 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, jam packed refrigerator bars, marble bathrooms, and massive flat screen TVs aren't as far out of reach as you may think. Thanks to the internet, it is now easier than ever to find fantastic luxury hotel deals.
The keys to finding a good bargain on a four to five-star hotel are timing and flexibility. If you know exactly where you want to go and aren't willing to budge on your travel dates, you should expect it to be a lot harder to find a good deal on a hotel. On the other hand, if there are multiple destinations you wouldn't mind visiting and you're willing and able to pack your bags and go on vacation at the last minute, you'll find many more luxury hotel deals.

Travel during the Off Season

Why travel during high season? There are too many crowds and the prices are higher. Everything from museum entrances to hotels to parking can cost more during the high season. If you want to find good bargains on luxury accommodations, traveling during the shoulder seasons or off season is your best bet. In some areas, traveling during the off season could mean that some attractions will be closed down or that the weather will be cold or rainy. In that case, the shoulder seasons are a better time to travel because you can enjoy the same attractions as high season without the crowds, exorbitant prices, and unpleasant weather.

Travel In-State

If you want to envelop yourself in luxury for the sake of experiencing luxury, why travel halfway across the world? You can most likely find a lovely luxury hotel in your own state, and you may even be able to get an attractive discount just for being an in-state resident! If you're content with staying close to your stomping grounds, check out the luxury hotels in the area and determine whether they offer discounts to state residents.

Check Online Deals Sites… And then Call the Hotels Directly

You can find rock-bottom prices on luxury hotels by scouring travel bargain websites. However, sometimes you can manage to negotiate an even lower price by contacting the hotel directly, particularly when occupancy is low for those particular travel dates.

Find Last Minute Deals

In order to find last minute deals on luxury hotels, contact travel agents and find out if they know of any deals for upcoming vacation packages or hotel stays. When travel agents have vacancies available for trips that are leaving within the next few days, they may be willing to cut you a good deal just to ensure that they are able to fill those vacancies. You can also stay on top of a lot of last minute deals by signing up for email alerts. If you don't mind the suspense of waiting until the last minute to pack your bags, you can often find excellent last minute bargains on luxury hotels. If you want to trade the shady motel room in for a luxury hotel room complete with sauna access, a Jacuzzi, and room service, keep these bargain hunting tips in mind. With a little effort, you can enjoy your much needed getaway in luxury and style rather than rough it on a budget!

Club Med Ixtapa Pacific

Back To Main Menu

DESTINATION -This all-inclusive resort has 30.9 acres on the west coast of Mexico, near Zihuatanejo (about 100 miles north of Acapulco). Families love:

     * The terrific kids programs
     * Baby Club, and Baby Welcome
     * Unique Club Med "G.O.s" and signature features

Club Med Background
Club Med was the pioneer in the concept of "all-inclusive" vacations, starting out in the 1950's as a real-club tent-village on a Mediterranean beach. Much has changed as Club Med has world-scaled and upscaled to over 90 resorts in 40 countries, but some core features remain the same.
The Club Med Difference
Club Med's kids have superlative unique signature programs and activities, but Club Med the biggest difference is more fundamental. All Club Med villages have GM's and GO's: GM's are the guests (Gentil Membres, or "gracious members"); GO's (gentils organisateurs, "gracious organizers") are the boundlessly energetic staff. Socialize All together, which makes a wonderfully friendly ambiance, especially in a family resort: kids love to share a meal with their kids' club leader.

Club Med Other bonuses include choice locations, Spacious grounds, a focus on recreation, trapeze school, a mini-club show in a professional theater, active kids clubs (no video screens) ...

- More about the Club Med Experience for Families

Club Med Ixapa: Features

This is a Spacious resort, built in hacienda-style in 3-storey buildings with terracotta tile ROOFS. Extra-large suites are available.

Grounds are huge: sports areas include a full-size soccer fields, tennis center, areas for inline skating, trapeze, Archery, and a section of the beach for Watersports. An open-air palapa facing the beach is used for fitness classes and for rehearsals for kids' dance classes.

For foodies: Club Med has roots in France, home of le gourmet. The main restaurant, El Encanto, has outdoor tables, and several differently-styled areas indoors with A / C; this restaurant is buffet-style, and also has a corner for baby food. The beachside Miramar has a la carte items, and is open late. The fine-dining restaurant is the elegant Luna Azul, reservations needed.

Club Med Ixtapa Pacific - Baby Club Med

Beach:
Club Med Ixtapa Pacific has a choice location on Playa Quieta (Calm Beach) bay. Boogie-boarding is lots of fun; the shallow gradual slope of the beach is good for toddlers, too.

Activities and recreation includes:

     * Sailing, kayaking
     * Tennis and Archery (with instruction), volleyball, basketball, mini-golf, in-line skating, soccer, rock-climbing wall
     * Trapeze, with instruction
     * Entertianment including evening shows in the theater. (The weekly Mini Club show is a hit.)

Kids Programs
Kids clubs are extensive, and you do not see videoscreens: what you do see are groups of kids with their leaders, having fun in different parts of the resort. Note that Baby and Petit Club Med's require extra charges; other kids' programs are all-included.

Nice touch, for kids: a special children's book, with story set right at the resort.

Babies and Toddlers:

     * Baby Welcome-all-included perks for babies: strollers, bathtubs, Bottle Warmers, potties, portable play-Cribs ...
     * Main restaurant has a microwave, Bottle Warmers, high chairs, booster seats
     * A convenience room with 24-hour access has sterilizers, Blenders, Bottle Warmers

     * Baby Club Med: for ages 4 to 23 months
     * For nap time, babies get the same crib all week
     * Kids have their own cubby, for storing their special stuff
     * Petit Club Med: For ages 2 and 3, usually in two age groups
     * Daytime and evening hours *

The GO's who work in the Baby and Petit Clubs focus specifically on those age groups; typically, they're friendly and enthusiastic young people who speak several languages.
Mini Club Med

     * For ages 4 to 10, divided into several age groups
     * The Mini Club has its own pool
     * Daytime and evening hours
     * Kids participate in the fun activities and sports noted above: for example, the Circus School has juggling, trampoline, and trapeze.
     * Club Med is always adding new programs for the mini-club. A few examples: Petit Tennis, for ages 3 to 7, with special gear; Hip Hop Kidz ®, for ages 4 to 17.
     * A highlight of the evening entertainment is the weekly Mini-Club show: kids perform the dances they learned in the kids' club, in a professional theater setting with lights and sound effects

Junior Club Med:

     * Year-round for ages 11 to 13, and during certain school holidays for ages 14 to 17
     * Junior Club Med has similar activities to the Mini-Club. Teen programs are less formalized; at time of writing, there's no Passworld for teens at this resort, but various fun activities are scheduled, such as night-time water polo.

Outings!
It's always a great idea to explore outside the resort. On our visit, we tried two half-day outings: a lovely horseride along a beautiful beach, and an ATV outing that's a hit with many guests (my teen-gave it a thumbs-up.) A snorkeling trip to a nearby island is popular too. You can also easily visit Zihautenejo ( "Zihau") by taxi: Stroll along a walkway by the beach, shop for Jewellry, hammocks, etc.
Club Med Ixtapa Pacific photo © Teresa Plowright

Keep in mind about Club Med Ixtapa Pacific:

     * Day-beds by the pool and beach are great for families with little kids (-get 'em early, though)
     * Lounge deck above the beach is nice at sunset: families play cards, perhaps a small band plays
     * Lockers and change rooms are available for those with a late departure: enjoy the day at the resort after checkout
     * Buildings do not have elevators, so if you have a lot of kiddie gear, try for the ground-floor
     * Family suites and extra-large suites are available
     * Some rooms do not have a balcony or a walk-out patio; if that's important, book accordingly

North American especially during holiday times, this resort has less of the international flavor that's a feature of Club Med; most clientele is from western Canada and the U.S.. Club Med aficionados will also notice that the trademark for seating (at round tables for eight, with fellow guests) is gone. Still the core differences Club Med remains, and families rave about the GO's and GM's and the kids' programs.

DESTINATION -Historic Tourism: US attractions from a past age

DESTINATION -Historic Tourism: US attractions from a past age.
The 19th Century saw the birth of tourism as we know it. The term: “tourist” emerged in the US to label those folks who would travel to Europe to see the historic architecture of London and Paris, or alternatively to the far-flung corners of their own country – such as the East Coast. In the late 1850s Yosemite Park became established as a definitive American tourist attraction where visitors could make use of the most fantastic invention of recent times, the camera. However where the United States succeeded with natural wonders, its cities were ugly and commercial in comparison to the beauty and art of Europe – and so the popular architectural attractions of the time seem quite strange by today’s standards.

The American School for the Deaf was founded in 1817 in West Hartford, Connecticut. Being the first of its kind, and a grand red brick building with impressive white pillars and a white bell spire, the institution became a popular tourist attraction. Its palatial architecture reflected the affluence of the fast-developing nation, and became something of a symbol for cultural integrity and a forward-thinking
society. The school is still there today – and boasts 200 students.

Along similar lines, The Perkins School for the Blind was established shortly after in Boston. During the 1830s the successful Boston merchant, Thomas Handasyd Perkins, donated his mansion to the Massachusetts Asylum for the Blind, and again, such a new and impressive institution began to be included in tourist brochures of the areas. By 1885 the school purchased six acres of land in the Southern area of Boston and the imposing five storey building built there became worthy enough for its own run of postcards.

Educational facilities weren’t the only growing attractions for tourists however. The Sing Sing Correctional Facility (named after the Native American Sinck Sinck tribe) in Ossining, New York, was one of the country’s pioneering profit-making jailhouses. Completed in 1828, the institution used harsh tactics to keep an efficient prisoner workforce who would mine marble from a nearby quality and sell it for the building of further notable buildings such as New
York University and the United States Treasury. A nice place to go for your honeymoon?

Yet perhaps the most intriguing early American visitor attraction was the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Massachusetts. Built in 1831, this was the first rural or garden style cemetery and took inspiration from the landscape gardens of England, as well as being seen as the first step of the parks and gardens movement. By the late 1830s a brochure was published entitled Picturesque Pocket Companion and Visitor's Guide Through Mt. Auburn. Its many trails and architecture of some of the monuments, such as the gothic Bigelow Chapel, were (and still are) of particular interest to visitors.

DESTINATION -
Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority launches first generation stakeholder programme

The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA), which manages the tourism industry within the Arabian Gulf emirate, has launched its first generation stakeholder programme 'Partners in Progess' to co-ordinate industry-wide destination development and promotion efforts.

Under the programme, the authority has established five industry development committees (IDCs) representing the tour operator, retail and attractions, accommodation, transport and business tourism sectors. The IDCs will meet regularly with the authority to identify challenges and opportunities and input into driving product development. Each committee leader will also serve on an overarching industry panel which will help inform the emirate's tourism strategy going forward.

The programme also features an annual 'State of the Industry' forum, which will update the industry on progress and plans going forward.

Launching the programme, His Excellency Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman, ADTA, told a gathering of several hundred representatives of Abu Dhabi's tourism industry that the launch of 'Partners in Progress' represented a new milestone for the sector. It was, he said, a framework to bring together, and hone, the support the industry already lends the authority into a more structured framework.

"This campaign will bring us together to further co-operate in all we do - and to ensure we speak with one voice. We will adopt the 'One Destination' approach which helped us secure host status for the 2012 World Ophthalmology Congress. We can now build on this successful formula,"

he said.

"We share one common aim - the delivery of an internationally recognised, sustainable tourism product, one which stands apart for its solid commitment to preservation of our environment, our heritage and traditions. In looking to the future, we will not lose sight of the past.

"All of you here serve an industry which is emerging as a key economic driver. We have achieved a great deal, but have yet more to do before welcoming our targeted 2.3m hotel guests by 2012.

"ADTA believes it alone cannot deliver the destination excellence our targets require - the task must be shared by all who invest in it, work in it, and most importantly - partner it."

The programme was instantly welcomed by some of Abu Dhabi's leading tourism industry stakeholders who pledged strong support for it.

HE Mohammed Bin Azzan Al Mazrouei, Director General, Abu Dhabi's Western Region Development Council said the programme represented a much-needed avenue for enhanced communication.

"We can't over communicate in the Abu Dhabi Government. The more we know about projects in Abu Dhabi, the more we can help. I think Partners in Progress is a great initiative and we in Al Gharbia will go the extra mile to support it."

HE Saif Mohamed Al Hajeri, Chairman, Abu Dhabi National Hotels, (ADNH) said the entire spectrum of the industry stands to benefit from the programme.

"It's a smart move in bringing all the stakeholders together to define the strategy and way forward for tourism in Abu Dhabi. It's good to work together, and ADNH will benefit from this initiative since ADNH is involved in sport, hotels, transport, catering and hospitality. It will help us work together and that will benefit ADNH and its stakeholders," he said.

Mohammed Abdul Latif Kanoo, Area Executive, Kanoo Group, which operates one of the Middle East's largest travel companies, said the programme would go a long way to enhance public-private sector communications.

"Having the 'Partners in Progress' programme here in Abu Dhabi is critical for bringing together people in direct contact with the ADTA, which is also the Government, and having that open dialogue is very, very critical for Abu Dhabi," he said.

James Hogan, CEO, Etihad Airways, the UAE's national airline, forecast that in the long-run, 'Partners in Progress', will hone Abu Dhabi's competitive edge.

"The more we come together as one, the more we can profile the brand and, more importantly the more we can deliver on what we say in regards to services and infrastructure, the more we can be different and competitive. I believe that we are where the Asian destinations were 30 years ago - Abu Dhabi is a new hub, a new centre of the world and by delivering that message as one, I think we can ensure we will be seen as the best in the world," he said.

Ali Bin Harmel Al Dhaheri, Managing Director of Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, now the Gulf's largest meetings industry facility and one of the world's most modern, described Partners in Progress as a "timely initiative."

"It is perfect timing as Abu Dhabi is working on so many outstanding projects in. All we need is to unite the efforts. By all of us working in a formalised way together we will deliver service excellence and an exceptional experience," he said.

Nasser Al Nowais, Chairman, of Abu Dhabi-headquartered Rotana Hotels & Resorts said the ultimate beneficiary of the programme would be the tourist.

"Partners in Progress is sending a message that we intend to look after the visitor from the minute they arrive here, from the minute they touch down at the airport right through their entire stay. This involves airlines, the hotels, the taxi operators and even the people serving in the shops. If we get it right together, visitors will be our greatest ambassadors spreading the word that when we promise travellers welcome, it's a promise we live up to," he commented.

The launch of 'Partners in Progress' was followed by an industry celebration with around 800 guests in the gardens of Abu Dhabi's Al Raha Beach Hotel which marked the fifth anniversary of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority.
