DESTINATION -Meeting between Indonesia and India with regard tourism, tourism officials meet in Yogyakarta last week to discuss ways to enhance tourism cooperation between the two countries, known exotic culture and natural attractions. Jakarta and New Delhi signed a memorandum of understanding on the issue in the capital of India in 2000.

The Ministry has set up tourism representative offices in New Delhi, with megadakan held various events such as exhibitions and invited journalists to India to promote Indonesian tourism sites. Making additional tourist arrivals with the number of Indian tourists increased to 112,267 last year, up 23.73 percent from 90,720 in 2007.

The Indonesian government tried to attract 150,000 and 160,000 Indian tourists this year, a serious challenge due to the economic downturn and the lack of direct flights between Jakarta and New Delhi.

In the two-day 1st Joint Working Group Meeting on Tourism between India and Indonesia in Yogyakarta from 27-28 August, 2009, both governments agreed to hold the media and tour operators junkets for each country and also exchange information on tourism development.

Indonesia also offers tourist sites to be used as a set for Bollywood film, the ministry said.

The Indonesian delegation was led by Wardiyatmo, ministry secretary-general, while the Indian delegation was led by Sujit Banerjee, secretary of the Ministry of Tourism India.
