Batam 2

Bintan first became politically important when Sultan Mahmud of the fallen Sultanate of Malacca fled to Bintan and created a resistance base there after Malacca was taken by the Portuguese forces in 1511. The Portuguese eventually destroyed the stronghold in 1526, and after a few years the Sultanate founded a new capital back on the Malay Peninsula and developed from there.

Bintan resort

Bintan was also once the capital of the Sultanate of Johor that grew to considerable political and cultural power from the 17th to the 19th century. The island played a central role in Malay culture.

At the beginning of 18th century the Sultanate of Johor entered into political turmoil and the capital moved back to Bintan as the Bugis took control of the sultanate. In the hands of the Bugis, Bintan became a powerful trading port, attracting regional, Western, Indian and Chinese traders as well as migrants including Chinese much in the same way Malacca developed into a regional power three centuries earlier.

The success of the port caught the attention of the European powers. The British, who controlled Penang, were looking for a new settlement further to the south of the Straits of Malacca that would contain the Dutch expansions and considered Bintan as a possible location.

The Dutch, however, no longer accepted the competition from Bintan and attacked and took control of the island at the end of the 18th century, bringing to an end its local trading supremacy and delaying the British arrival in the area for a few years until the internal power struggle within the sultanate of Riau-Johor offered them the opportunity to take control of the island of Singapore.

The island declined as a trading port but grew as a cultural center as a new palace on Penyengat Island developed into the stronghold of Malay and Islamic culture

Batam Island

Batam Island

BarelangBatam is one of the largest islands in the Riau archipelago, and not long ago it was just another poor island with coastal villages and unspoiled nature. The declaration of the Batam free trade zone in 1989 has turned the island upside down, after just a few years of rapid construction it now has a modern airport, tourist and business centers and a still growing infrastructure that has changed the island completely.

It is no secret that nearby Singapore is the role model, and the goal is eventually to become one of the biggest ports of Southeast Asia and a major center of international trade, industry and commerce. The strategic location close to the Malacca Strait and Singapore will certainly help reaching this goal, but like the rest of Indonesia the economy and development here was dealt a major blow during and after the Asia economic crisis in the late 1990's.

Batam is actually one of fastest growing tourist destinations in Indonesia in terms of visitor arrivals. There are several tourist resorts here with luxurious hotels and golf courses. Many visitors however choose to use Batam only as an entry point, it is only 40 minutes from Singapore with boat, and then leave with the first available transport to other destinations in Indonesia.

History

Nagoya Hill The history of Batam is tightly interwoven with nearby Bintan island and the rest of the Riau archipelago. According to Chinese chronicles Batam was already inhabited as early as 231 A.D. when Singapore island was still called Pulau Ujung (Ujung Island). It came under control of the Malacca kingdom from the 13th century, and later taken over by the Sultan of Johor who ruled until the 18th century. The coastal villages that face Singapore is said to have been a hideout for pirates who hijacked ships in the strait.

In 1824 the name of the island again appear in the Treaty of London which led to the division of the region between the Dutch and the British. Batam and the surrounding islands later became part of the Riau Lingga Kingdom, a situation that lasted until 1911, when the Dutch East Indies colonial administration took over.
The People

Close to Sekupang, a large part of the population still make their living from fishing and sea transport. The native people of Batam are of Malay origin, but with the rapid growth and development of the area various ethnic groups from all over Indonesia has come here in search for jobs and a better life. Traditionally most of the people live in coastal villages, while the "Orang Laut" (sea people) continue to live on boathouses and boats and generally fish for a living. Some of their catch are sold to Singapore. Bahasa Indonesia is the language used to communicate among the multi-ethnic population here, while many now also understand English, which is commonly used in business communication.

Culture

Even if Batam is multi-ethnic it is still the Malayan culture and Islam which forms the root of the local culture. Both daily life and the ceremonies have religious and mythical elements, expressed in dance, music and other forms of art. Some of the most popular traditional dances are Jogi Dance, unique for Batam, Zapin Dance, which reflects strong Arabic influence, Persembahan Dance, to welcome honored guests and Ronggeng Dance, where the guests can be invited to come up and join the dance and song.

Buddhism has a long history in China

The Jinshan District is located in the southwest part of Shanghai. If you intend to experience a China Buddhism tour, the five major temples here make this area a very good place to start.

Take the subway, bus (Lianzhu Line, Lianjin Line or Shenjin Line) or a taxi to your first stop, Donglin Temple (Addr: No. 150 Donglin Street, Zhujing town; Admission fee: CNY30.00). First built in 1308, for 700 years Donglin Temple has repeatedly been through war, fire, disrepair and reconstruction. In 1987, the only remaining original hall of Donglin Temple was listed as a city-level protected cultural relic by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government.

Unlike Donglin Temple, Wanshou Temple (Addr: No. 1148 Jinwei Village, Wei Town; Admission fee: CNY3.00) did not survive the destruction of the years. It was originally built in 1179, but the one we are visiting is a copy built in 1993. Walking through the Mountain Gate, Three Saint Hall, Mahavira Palace, Garan Hall, Merits and Virtues Hall, Drum and Bell Tower, we believe that, relic or not, you will feel the spirit of Buddhism has never left it.

The highlight of Songyin Temple (Addr: No. 1080 Jiufeng Village, Songyin Town; Admission fee: CNY10.00) is Huayan Pagoda. The pagoda was financed and built in 1380 by a respectable monk named Deran who had dedicated his life to this temple. He asked the emperor to vouchsafe the name “Songyin” and kept the Huayan Sutra which was written in his blood in the Huayan Pagoda. This great honor has remained to this day, and Master Deran will always be remembered.
