Gong festival is a major tourism event for Sarawak plans early next year, according to the State Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin.

Party such as this will attract tourists not only from countries in the region, but also the Western world, he said.

Festival held by the Department of Sarawak state museum to preserve traditional culture, was launched by Vice-Chairman Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan.

This year the festival is only held for one day and involved in traditional music and instrument performance by a few large ethnic groups in the country.

Manyin said the department planned to promote the festival in stages, with the festival next year to attract participation from countries other Southeast Asia before it extended to other countries.

He believes that if managed properly, the gong festival, which can achieve international status in three years as Miri International Jazz Festival and the Rainforest World Music Festival.

Meanwhile, Dr Chan suggested that the festival will be held twice a year to maintain the interest of consistency between the lovers, and called on the Agenda to include local tourism promotion in other countries.
