Michael Kalinich and his sister, Susan Kalinich- Fabian, will sell Sawtelle Travel Service & Cruise Desk Inc. to Mark Webster, owner of Plaza Travel, in a "commission sale" that will provide the Sawtelle owners with a percentage of the new business' revenue over the next four years, principals said.

"We stand to make quite a bit more money that way" than with a direct sale, Kalinich said.

The combined agency will be called Plaza & Sawtelle Travel and be located at the Plaza Travel site at 3036 Old Vestal Road, just east of the Matthews Kia auto dealership.

Effective Monday, Sawtelle's agents will begin working at the Old Vestal Road location. Their phone numbers and e-mail addresses will remain the same.

Kalinich said he's wanted to sell the travel business for several years as he sought a career change. He's been assistant athletic director of corporate partnerships at Binghamton University for the past 15 months. His sister will remain with the travel business, working in sales.

Webster said he was resistant to the deal at first, happy with the business he had.

The 4,500-square-foot Sawtelle building will be available for lease, Kalinich said. The palm trees out front, which sparked controversy from neighbors who wanted them taken down, will remain for now.

"Things are so volatile in the travel industry right now," Kalinich said. "Before 9/11, there were probably 25 travel agencies in Broome County. Now, there's just a small handful. It ensures we're going to be in business for the next 10, 20 years."

Sawtelle was established 63 years ago. Plaza Travel has been in business for 41 years.
